Healthy Food for Happy Pets

Premium Dog Food AND TREATS FOR YOUR LABRADOODLE PUPPY

-We use Blue Buffalo for puppies, Natures balance for puppies, and Origen for puppies. we like to switch it up occasionally so that the puppy doesn't get bored with their food. and we switch it up occasionally for our adult Australian labradoodles as well. Other great food brands are Farmers Dog and Fresh Pet. As adults we like to use Natures balance Lamb and Brown Rice version, or Avoderm Lamb and brown Rice. Another great brand we like to use is Acana Lamb and Pumkin wholesome grains version. You want to avoid "Grain Free" foods as studies have shown that long term use of grain free food can leads to heart myopathy in dogs and potentially other food allergies. We also highly recommend doing an allergy test on your Labradoodle when they are above 1 year of age as well since a allergy majority of the allergy's dogs have are food related. We use and recommend an allergy test from www.atmypet.com as its economical at only $108 and covers a wide range of allergies from food to environmental. The company also recommends waiting until the dog is above 1 year of age as dogs are similar to people in that they tend to develop allergies as they get older. And its a great way of knowing just what you should try to avoid for your specific dog. Every dog is an individual, so they don't all have the same allergies. We have identified over the years that the Australian labradoodle tends to have a higher sensitivity to things like chicken and turkey, while lamb and salmon tend to be safer options (we favor lamb).

-Bully sticks (Costco sells a package of 12 inch, 12 count for $25)

-Bone center cuts 4-5 inches with bone marrow inside. These are essential for the teething puppy and bored adult dog. They will keep your puppy entertained for hours but take away any small pieces that can be choked on.

-Training treats –Any type of natural dog/puppy treat that are very small in size. We love using boiled chicken Livers cut into small pieces which are great for growing puppies. We also recommend Stella & Chewy Digestive treats or freeze dried liver treats. Liver is highly nutritious and they love it. Treats should be given often for various reasons. We will throw a few treats in the crate every time we want them to go in it, which effectively trains them to go into their crate upon command.

- Just for Pets Probiotic –by a company called Just Thrive

https://justthrivehealth.com/products/just-pets-probiotic

These probiotics are the best on the market; they will survive the acidity of the stomach to work in the large intestine. Very important for the long term health and vitality of your dog, especially after de-wormings/antibotics which strip the gut of all bacteria (good and bad). As you may have heard, the latest research says that your gut health determines your overall health, as 70% of your immune system is within your gut.

Use: Sprinkle one tablet in food or water as needed for occasional throw-up or diarrhea. And for maintenance.

-Nutritious Treats: Stella and Chewy’s Dandy Lamb Dinner Patties. these are great for training treats as well. Just make sure you break them up into small puppy bite sized pieces

Toys

-For chew toys we like to recommend various toys specifically for dental development like Nylabones and deer or elk antlers. these types of chews are hard and non-toxic. The hard surface causes the puppy teeth to loosen so that they can come out in a timely manner. If puppy teeth take too long to come out then the adult teeth will start to grow in and be crowded by the baby teeth, thus causing misalignment.

- Another toy we like to recommend for puppy teeth development is the rope toy. These toys are crucial for dental health as they act as a dental floss for both puppy and adult stages of life and reduce tarter build up. But as a puppy they will also catch some of the loosening baby teeth and help to pull the loosened teeth out, assisting in quicker removal of those baby teeth.

- We also like to recommend the smaller Kong balls or similar sized harder rubber balls like Chuck It brand balls as the rubber ones are a little more durable and they cannot remove the outer felt from the ball. these toys are vital for dental development as they help to prevent a condition called "Base Narrow Canine". This is when the lower canine teeth grow straight up and down instead of flaring outwards. If the lower canine grows straight up and down, they are larger than the rest of the teeth in their jaw (other than the upper canines) and they will ultimately hit the roof of their mouth. This can poke holes in the hard pallet of the mouth and cause pain and even infection and change the puppies mood like it would anyone else in pain, making them irritable, less friendly, and even of poor health. So, the ball that is smaller in size, that the puppy can fit its mouth over, will coach the lower canines to flare outward and eliminate the possibility of base narrow canine from ever happening. This can save your puppy lots of pain, and you lots of vet bills at the specialists to deal with that condition. In addition to the dental development benefit of the balls, they also are lots of fun for your puppy learning how to fetch and bring it back for interaction-the Australian labradoodle puppy is instinctively a ball fetcher. And its also effective for working on their name recognition while you call and clap for them to bring the toy back to you.

-We also like stuffed toys made from Kong or Bark as they tend to be more durable and the puppies cant just tear the stuffing out of them in the first few hours. and of course they love to hear the squeaking noise

 - And a fabulous toy called the Snuggle Puppy, this toy really helps the puppy adjust to its new home, it has a heartbeat so it thinks it is snuggling next to a littermate.

BEDS, CRATES, GROOMING SUPPLIES, care products, AND OTHER items

-Buy a dog bed or two, we like to use folded up queen or king sized blankets because they are easy to wash. But we also have cushy dog beds, they prefer one’s with a lot of cushion support on the bottom, in a circular/rounded shape with thick rims so they can feel snuggled. Best to get ones that are completely washable.

 - Gates or exercise pens to keep your puppy in one room such as the living room or kitchen or any limited space with easily washable floors. And get extra wash clothes to clean up messes.

-Wire crate that is about 36 L x 23 W x 25 H inches. We like the MidWest Brand. We also like their stainless steel food and water bowls that bolt to the side of the crate so puppy cannot knock them over.

- Natural cleaning products for puppy messes as well as for around the whole house. Natural, green cleaning products have been proven to be far better for your health and the health of your whole family. Natural, green products can be more expensive and less effective, that’s why we use and recommend Melaleuca products (completely non-toxic and made in the USA). Things like disinfecting spray, floor cleaner, laundry detergent, body care products, supplements and much more. We use distilled white vinegar non diluted and put it in a spray bottle.

Please, Don’t use chlorinated bleach! When chlorine mixes with the ammonia in urine it creates very toxic fumes. Non chlorinated bleach (hydrogen peroxide) is safe for sterilization.

-ID tag and a 9 to 13 inch sized puppy collar with leash. You will also need an adult sized collar 16-19 inch once the puppy is older.

-Brushes – we like a de-matting brush for when the puppy transitions its coat from puppy to adult and a pin brush the rest of the time. (A clipper will be needed once your dog is a year old for occasional trims or shaves. We use the Andis AGC Super 2 Speed Clipper 4400spm (much less expensive then a trip to the groomers)

-Puppy shampoo and conditioner– We use any mild type will work, even tearless baby shampoo which works really well. We also have on hand All-natural Oatmeal bases which are best for puppies as they tend to have dry, itchy skin since they do so much growing. We also like to use Wondercide or Earthbath brands.

- Elevated bath tube to wash your dog in. It will save your back! We put it inside our shower and use the detachable showerhead, so the water is luke warm. www.boosterbath.com

-Nail clippers if you will be trimming your puppies nails, we use Millers clippers that don’t make a sound when cutting. We also use the nail rotary file called PediPaws.

-Ear Care/Maintenance prevention: Brand: Wondercide.

Use: for an infection or yeast build up as recommended on bottle. For Maintenance prevention use once weekly. Breeds like the Australian Labradoodle have floppy ears and can have higher risk for chronic ear infections and yeast build up so prevention is key.

-Flea/Tick/Mosquitoes(heartworm)treatment. We use and recommend all-natural Wondercide Flea, Tick and Mosquitoes Collar that lasts for 4 months at a time. www.wondercide.com

For whatever reason you would chose a chemical based brand,(camping trip or active flea infestation) The only other brand we recommend is Frontline-Plus topical only. One application can protect against fleas for up to 3 months, it also protects against ticks and mosquitoes. Usually only needed in the warmer months. Please follow the directions, usually the puppy has to be a certain age before able to use, 12 weeks minimum. For pups under 12 weeks of age, you can use Advantix. We do not recommend chemical based products for long-term use.

WARNING: We DO NOT recommend ANY Oral flea/tick/heartworm treatments such as Bravecto, (Vets highly push them on owners) it has been known to be deadly or have neurological effects. The FDA has recently put out a warning on these products in October 2020.

Personally, I have a suspicion that these types of oral medications lower your dogs immune system over time, as it is technically a pesticide that is being ingested on a monthly basis. We tend to be very cautious of any type of medication, and feel natural is best. Also keep in mind that since your dog will be mainly in-doors and has that thick coat, it serves as a natural protection against mosquitos.

- We use desensitizing CD's to help the pups get used to different noises, and we highly recommend that you continue this training at home. It can be purchased at Amazon and its called Calm Pet - Desensitizing Sounds for Animals. It plays Firework Sounds, Fireworks With Crowd Sounds, Thunderstorm Sounds, Car Engine Sounds, Traffic - City Sounds, Traffic - Country Road Sounds, Traffic - Highway Sounds, Traffic - Urban Road Sounds, Aeroplane Sounds, Crying Baby Sounds, Dog Sounds, Cat Sounds, Washing Machine Sounds, Vacuum Cleaner Sounds, Hairdryer Sounds, Hair Clipper Sounds, Door Knocking Sounds, and Doorbell Sounds.
